20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
first letter of John is a perfect view breaking down those who are in Christ
and those who are not. We see throughout the 5 chapters how John breaks down
those who love their brothers, abide in Christ, but those who hate, do not.
Christ came to give us this knowledge, to love one another, to reach out and
support one another no matter the cost is. Being in God, who is true and being
in His Son Jesus Christ go together inseparably. While the grammar is a bit
difficult in the verse, it reasonable to understand that “the true God and
eternal life” is Jesus Christ. If we look all the way back to the beginning of
the letter, chapter 1 verse 2, we see that John ties “eternal life” to Christ. He
is God, He is our eternal life.
