John 1 Verse 16

16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.[1]

This is the only time John makes this reference, but its common among Paul’s. John is emphasizing that salvation is a gift from God, not something we earn. A common phrase established during the reformation, Sola Gratia, grace alone. The reformers put for the fact that salvation is a gift through the grace of God. This was a counter point to what the catholic church taught; that a man must earn his salvation by works, plus grace. Looking ahead to verse 17, we see this point further established. The law that was imparted to Moses was a gift of God’s grace and succeeded by the fuller grace that was revealed in Jesus.
